A Brit a Day [#623]
My friend Donna and I received a joint-custody gift from a friend who saw Dan Radcliffe in 'How to Succeed...' on Broadway--the original cast recording CD. It's my turn to have the CD, and I can't wait to hear it. I haven't seen 'How to Succeed...' since high school, and it was a high school production. Donna suggests the next musical outing for Dan should be a 'Guys and Dolls' revival with Rupert and Emma!

Here's a little bonus that I did not post as the main selection because I wasn't sure it would run properly. Thanks again, people on tumblr.

Ah, yes, some years elapsed between the takings of these two photographs, but I think the man is more alluring than ever in the more recent one, below.

A Brit a Day [#620]
My kids and I were talking [we do that sometimes over the holidays] about how much we love the movie 'Muppet Treasure Island.' In that case, today's guest Brit could be none other than Tim Curry in his role as Long John Silver.

Jasper Future and Eddie Argos, the two tallest men in Art Brut, in Salzburg, Austria. I recognize that castle.
[Ed. note: When in town, you can't get away from the bloody thing. See:

Matt Smith's ready for a drive over the river and through the woods. There are a lot of horses under that hood, and I imagine they know the way.

A Brit a Day [#614]
In keeping with the anticipation of Le Carre for Christmas, I searched the internet for a picture of Alan Rickman as he appeared in his brief role in 'Smiley's People' so many years ago [above].
When I came across this screen cap [below], I thought I'd found a picture of Rickman talking to himself.

A Brit a Day [#613]
Benedict Cumberbatch and Gary Oldman in 'Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.'
I can't wait for this movie. I've been living in a kind of Cold-War-European-1970's aesthetic lately. I traveled around the East/West German border in 1980, and this week I had my Kodachrome slides of that trip transferred to DVD. [See a few on my other blog: http://anthropologic-ephemera.dreamwidth.org/] So I've been reliving my brief days behind the Iron Curtain [that's so fun to say..]
And as for the 1970's--I finally saw 'Last Tango in Paris' for the first time on Netflix the other day.

A Brit A Day Addendum
I'd think after 600+ installments, I don't have to tell you that A Brit a Day is a 'work in progress'.
Henceforth, I won't be applying that particular tag to the ABAD posts.
Right!
A Brit a Day [#608]
I watched the Doctor Who episode called 'The Girl in the Fireplace' last night, all the while thinking that Madame de Pompadour was played by Georgia Moffat, David Tennant's significant other, and thinking to myself what a lovely couple they are, look at their sparkling chemistry, yada yada yada.....then realized that I had confused the story of how they met [making the episode 'The Doctor's Daughter,' I think] with the story of how 'The Girl in the Fireplace' had moved my friend Eddie to tears. They are both lovely girls, but here is the real Georgia:

You know you want it...our cozy fall weather means you have to have it...to hear the voice described as oil dripping on velvet.
There is a particularly nice snip from an event where Rickman Speaks here:

Eddie Argos and Dyan Valdes, a.k.a. Everybody Was in the French Resistance...Now.
I hope my friends, now residents of Berlin, have discovered the novels by Philip Kerr that make up the Bernie Gunther trilogy, collectively known as Berlin Noir.

I thought the storyline of Jorge Garcia's character Hugo was an integral part of the plot of 'Lost,' but I do admit that I've been ruthless in cropping him out of pictures of HIC.

A Brit a Day [#600]
Best screen cap ever. And such a sad and wonderful moment.
It is only fitting that the 600th post in A Brit a Day should feature Mr. Rickman in the persona of Prof. Snape--he was the first object of my fascination with these beloved British men.

A Brit a Day [#599]
In the back row of this shot: Eddie Argos, left; Chris Chinchilla, right.
Eddie recalls in his blog recently how Art Brut got some initial face time with the public when they decided to go to one of Pete Doherty's guerilla gigs back in the day--
Anyway Pete turned up broke a string in the first song and then ran away, leaving an angry mob of people shouting for more. The support band wouldn't play another set for some reason. So the promoters asked if anyone in the room was in a band. Art Brut had only played maybe one show perhaps two by then and we weren't even all at the show but my brother immediately put his hand up and said yes we're a band. So Me, Chris, Mickey and My Brother all climbed onto the stage and improvised some songs. We played Modern Art, Bang Bang Rock And Roll (I think for the first time) an amazing Ciccone song called 'Last Tube Home' and a cover of Teenage Kicks.
I like that according to the Half Man Half Biscuit song Asparagus Next Left by playing a Guerrilla Gig in the middle of another groups Guerilla Gig I have played the ultimate Guerrilla Gig.
And yes, there is a video--here's the link:
