After last night's opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games, my head is spinning with Brits I'd like to humbly thank/honor/kneel down to for the emotionally charged spectacle they laid before my watering eyes:  Danny Boyle, J K Rowling, Sir Paul McCartney, Alex Turner and the Arctic Monkeys [for that awesome cover of 'Come Together.'  I remember when Alex Turner was too young to drink in the clubs he played in--he finally looks like a grown up man.]

But for the sheer happiness his appearance brought me, I have to pick Sir Kenneth Branagh in a stovepipe hat......

....followed at a respectable distance by Daniel Craig transforming the Queen of England into a Bond girl.

As another viewer wrote on Tumblr, "Anyone know where I can download an app that turns me into a Brit?"

You know, I've come to realize that a static photograph of Matt Smith barely does him justice.  Like so many of the men I love, you don't see the real Matt until you see him in charmingly fluid motion.  Thank heaven for GIFs and the fans who make them.

Mark Cavendish stormed to his 22nd Tour de France stage win as Bradley Wiggins remained on course for overall victory....the world champion claimed his second victory of this year's Tour on stage 18 as the peloton caught an escape group inside the final 1.5km.


Cavendish powered away in the final 500m to draw level with Lance Armstrong and Andre Darrigade in all-time wins.


"I just knew I was going to go for it," said the 27-year-old. "I have done nothing all Tour so I have saved so much energy.


"I knew I would be able to go from a long way out, and no-one would get past me today. I felt really good.


"It would have been easy for the guys to cruise into Paris and Sean [Yates, Team Sky's sporting director] was saying 'just take it easy' but I was pleading for a chance in the team meeting.


"But then Brad [Wiggins] said 'we are going to ride today' and Froomie [Chris Froome] committed to my cause and I'll always be grateful for that. We have got a great group of guys. It has been an emotional three weeks but I have enjoyed it."


The Tour de France ends tomorrow, but the Olympic cycling road race is a week from today.  Can't wait.

When I see these two screen caps from 'Henry IV, part 2,' the third installment of the BBC's 'The Hollow Crown,' a little voice in my head says, prayerfully, 'thank you....Shakespeare never wrote stage directions that this scene is set in a sauna, so someone....oh good lord, thank you....'
